Homeschool Books and Supplies for 2nd Grade in 2020: What We Use
If you’re new to homeschooling, you can also sign up for an educator account at Barnes & Noble. It’s free – you just tell them on the application that you teach homeschool. It gives you 20% off of your purchases. This link tells about it: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/h/bn-educators
Here is the list of the curricula, textbooks, workbooks, and online trainings we use for our preschool kids.
Some of the links in this post are my affiliate links. It won’t cost you any extra if you buy from them but I get a small referral fee for recommending to my friends. (And of course, I recommend what I use, so you know I like this stuff anyway!)
2nd Grade Homeschool Books & Supplies
Here are the most basic homeschool books, workbooks, and videos I use to teach my 2nd graders. While there are other things I use as extras and just to make things more fun, you could give an above-average education to your child with these things.
1. Math
- Spectrum Math workbook These workbooks are also available at Barnes & Noble.
2. Spelling:
- Building Spelling Skills, Grade 2 – This is a great spelling program because it gives them a new list of words every week and you provide 2 bonus words. I give the kids a spelling test at the end of each week’s work.
3. Handwriting practice:
- Carson Dellosa – The Complete Book of Handwriting for Grades K–3, Language Arts, 416 Pages. This book teaches the Zaner-Bloser type of handwriting, also called ball and stick, for printing. It also includes cursive.
4. Social Studies
We use McGraw-Hill social studies textbooks, which are easy to find used on both Amazon and eBay. I just search for “mcgraw hill social studies grade 2” and go through the results. Make sure you read the description to check that the condition is like-new or excellent, with minimal writing or highlighting. You want a usable book!
It doesn’t really matter what year the textbook came out. Textbooks are not updated every year, so you may find the books you’re looking at have a 2003 edition, a 2008 edition, a 2012 edition, and a 2020 edition.
You’ll pay an expensive price to buy the newest edition and it’s really not necessary. Often, almost nothing changes between editions or just small updates to add new information. You can easily add that new information yourself with YouTube videos.
How to use the textbook as your curriculum: At the 2nd grade level, it’s easy to use the textbook as your whole program for a subject. I have the kids read a lesson aloud to me. We talk about the lesson and the vocabulary words together. Then they answer the questions at the end of the lesson out loud. It’s easy and it starts great conversations!
5. Science
We use Foresman science textbooks, which are also easy to find used on both Amazon and eBay. I just search for “Foresman science grade 2” and go through the results. Make sure you read the description to check that the condition is like-new or excellent, with minimal writing or highlighting. You want a usable book!
Again, the year doesn’t matter, especially for science. Often, almost nothing changes in elementary science textbooks.
How to use the textbook as your curriculum: At the 2nd grade level, it’s easy to use the textbook as your whole program for a subject. I have the kids read a lesson aloud to me. We talk about the lesson and the vocabulary words together. There are also plenty of science experiments included in the text.
Often, I have them keep a notebook or binder. They copy the bold vocabulary words into the binder on paper and then write the definition from the textbook. Then they answer the questions at the end of the lesson out loud.
6. Language Arts
- Carson Dellosa – Spectrum Language Arts workbook for 2nd Grade, 176 Pages, Ages 7–8 with Answer Key. These workbooks are also available at Barnes & Noble.
